Shawn and Beth Dougherty have been farming together since the 1980’s, for the last twenty years in eastern Ohio, where they manage 90 acres, much of it designated by the state as ‘not suitable for agriculture’. Using intensive grazing as the primary source of food energy, they raise dairy and beef cows, sheep, farm-fed hogs, and a variety of poultry, producing most of the food, feed and fertility for humans and animals, on the farm. Concerned that farming is so often dependent upon multiple off-farm resources, from feed, fuel and fertilizer to water and electricity, their ongoing project is to identify and test the means by which farming was done for centuries with a minimum of off-farm inputs. Their research has led them to identify grass conversion, especially the daily conversion of grass into milk by dairy ruminants, as a key to whole-farm sustainability, combined with the integrated nutrient feed-backs that are possible with a community of diverse animal and plant species, domestic and native. They are the authors of The Independent Farmstead,

Terry started his farming career on a .25 acre plot growing organic vegetables for stores and farmers market in 1978. He joined the organic farming movement in 1987, becoming active on the board of Ozark Organic Growers Association. He then co-founded Missouri Organic Association (renamed Mid-America Organic Association), holding the office of President several times. Terry grew food for Missouri’s second CSA, which served 90 families from 1989 to 1995. Terry became active in the Elderberry Improvement Project as a donator of germplasm. His elderberry plantation was among the first to use the recommended culture methods for varieties developed from wild Missouri elderberry plants.. Subsequently, he raised the largest elderberry acreage in the United States. Terry spends a great deal of time recruiting growers and teaching them how to grow and harvest elderberries and how to prepare their crop for market. He has developed two unique products using a proprietary process under the River Hills Harvest label. He travels across the U.S. sharing the economic opportunities presented by elderberries and sharing his knowledge about growing, harvesting and selling their crop to farmers. At home, he gives farm tours, tastings and sponsors Elderberry Mentoring Workshops, as well as performing custom planting and management work.

We are excited about the quality o pwe have for the Ozarks Homesteading Expo. BRING CASH for easier shopping since there is no Wif the cell service might get bogged up at times with thousands of people at the fairgrounds.
Please reach us at ozarkshomesteading@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We love pets but please leave them at home. The close proximately in tents, the heat, and the livestock present do not make it a great environment for pets.
Food trucks will be available (and we have a lot more this year after our unfortunate cancellation of several last year). Some of the food trucks have made improvements for faster service and are even offering sack lunch pre-orders and a pre-order pickup line. You are certainly welcome to bring your own food, however, we ask that you leave coolers outside the speaker tents. . There is a great, shade park right across the street that also offers picnic tables and even grills.
Sorry, there is no room for camping at the fairgrounds. Consider Natural Farming Campgrounds at https://naturalfarmslc.com Tell them you are with the Expo and get a discount.
THEnter main parking on the Garst Street south of the fairgrounds. When that is full there is a parking lot entrance one block south of there where signs will direct and we will try to offer shuttle. There is also parking across the road in the city park and along with side streets AND a church parking lot north of the fairgrounds is offering parking by donation. Handicap parking will be available, watch for signs.
Seating is provided in the speaker areas but you are ENCOURAGED to bring your own chairs in the case of overflow seating or if you want to sit in the shade.
Children should not be left unsupervised. If your children are patient enough to sit through one to one and a half hour presentations without disrupting other attendees then we would love for them to come learn alongside you. (Children left to play in close proximity to speaking areas need to keep noise level/playing down in consideration of attendees trying to listen) We will have limited activities/workshops for children but parents will need to be nearby. We may also have some small animals for them to engage with. Parents are asked not to allow their children to disturb nature at the fairgrounds including trees/tree limbs, wild flowers or other botanicals and to be nature conscientious if wading in the creek. Due to seating and space if you have more than a couple of children you might want to bring your own chairs and/or blankets to sit on.
If you would like to volunteer with set up, gates, or parking we would love to have you join us. Volunteers will get a weekend ticket, a T-Shirt and one meal ticket. To volunteer email: ozarkshomesteading@gmail.com
